NEW YORK -- Two tobacco-industry trade groups persuaded a New York state judge to rescind his week-old order placing them under temporary control of court-appointed receivers pending a resolution of the state attorney general's effort to dissolve the groups.
New York Supreme Court Judge Stephen Crane agreed after a hearing that Attorney General Dennis Vacco hadn't provided enough evidence that the Tobacco Institute and the Council for Tobacco Research USA Inc. were likely to dispose of their assets if the receivers didn't immediately step in.
