Stephen Crane's three novels written between 1892 and 1894 explore the crossing from home into the world. 'George's Mother' serves as a link between the similar theme in 'Maggie' and 'The Red Badge of Courage.' In 'George's Mother,' Crane creates the story of a mother who tries to dominate her grown son by insisting that he follow her moral example, but he eventually breaks free from her and goes out to struggle in the world. The novel moves between morality and emotions, which is characteristic of Crane's fiction.
