Stephen Crane's novel 'The Red Badge of Courage' depicts the later American generation disregarding the Civil War but fails to portray the common soldier's viewpoint concerning realistic aspects of the war. Middle-class and post-Reconstructionist sentiments may have caused the main root of the war to fade from memory. Crane's general view of epistemological solipsism may also have caused such forgetfulness. However, the author's rich use of literary Impressionism draws attention to the impressive representational medium.
