I KNEW Stephen Crane's name and the title of his American Civil War novel, The Red Badge of Courage, but that was about it, so this book's one-line introduction, "some of this story is true" left me guessing.

Did Crane and a woman called Cora really "live in sin" in Surrey, purporting to be married and lionised by the locals? And did he disappear to Cuba in 1898 to report on the Spanish-American War leaving the extravagant but penniless Cora to deal with creditors, rumour mongers and hangers-on?
