Introduction
In a sense any outline of the poetry of a new country is the record of a
lack of tradition. The main thing shared by the remarkable men and women
considered here is their intense individuality. Of course, all poets must find
their individual voices in order to be poets at all - but the early American
poets had formidable objective problems. Their individuality expressed itself
in being poets at all in a country that had no literary "climate" or
