Though the struggle in the forest increased its din, the "ragged line" of
the 304th enjoyed a short lull. A man who had been shot through the body
(Jimmie Rogers) cried out bitterly, thrashing about in the grass, and twisting
his body into strange positions. The youth's friend, thinking he had seen a
stream, went to fetch water. Henry accompanied him, and after a vain search
for the stream, during which they spied a burning house, crowds of retreating
