As the chapter opens, the same column of men which had moments before
advanced so stoutly and gestured so heroically came flooding out of the woods
in retreat. The youth was struck dumb in agony and amazement, and threw aside
his "mental pamphlets on the philosophy of the retreated and rules for the
guidance of the damned."

the titles of philosophical works which promise to teach codes of action from
