This chapter opens with the youth in a mood of elation - a premature
"ecstasy of self-satisfaction." He saw himself as a magnificent warrior, a
fine fellow, who had achieved ideals which he had formerly considered beyond
him. Amid a general atmosphere of sociability, of handshakings and earnest
conversations, the youth luxuriated. In amazed consternation they were
