Chapter 3

On the next night the columns of marching men, looking like purple
streaks, filed across a river, the waters of which appear wine-tinted by a
glaring fire. (One of Homer's constant epithets for the sea in his Iliad is
"the wine-dark sea.) The fire also caused occasional gleams of gold or
silver among the troops, while out of the mysterious shadows cast by the hills
of the farther shore came the "solemn" song of insects.
