Not long after the publication of his novel The Shadow-Line, Joseph Conrad wrote a letter to Sidney Colvin cautioning him against reading too much into the presentation of setting in that tale. "Very dear of you to write so appreciatively about the little book," Conrad taells him, "But I don't agree that a local-knowledge man would be the right reviewer for it.
