Very little attention has been provided upon two female background characters in Joseph Conrad's 'Heart of Darkness.' Critics who attribute sexism to Conrad tend to concentrate on three main female characters instead. However, a rigorous analysis of these two background women will provide a distinction between Conrad's gender attitude to that of the novel's Marlow character while clarifying Marlow's part and emphasizing Conrad's humor.
