Analysis Of Characters
The following characters are presented in the order in which they appear
in the novel. Conrad, you will notice, gives some characters no name other
than "the first mate of the Patna," say. I have included these characters,
although unnamed, because they are important to the novel. Indeed, Conrad
never gives us the last name of Jim himself. No doubt Conrad wished to be so
deliberately ambiguous for his own reasons. I have excluded scarcely any
character, named or unnamed, who is mentioned in the novel.
