In 2002 a collection of essays by Brigitte Kronauer was published in Germany under the title, Zweideutigkeit (ambiguity), an aptly chosen title for the work of an author who confesses to an ongoing fascination with ambiguity. Ambiguity first excited her at the age of fourteen and, at times, borders for her on an aesthetic or artistic credo. Born in 1940 in Essen but now living in Hamburg, Kronauer has ranked among the important authors of German literature for nearly a quarter of a century.
