In October 1918, my grandfather Edmund Candler wrote to his brother Henry from London (1) as follows: "I lunched with Conrad yesterday. He is a real friend. He knows and remembers every story in 'The General Plan!'" The General Plan was Candler's collection of short stories, mainly with Indian themes, published by Blackwood in 1911. According to Knowles (106), the Conrads were in London for a fortnight at the beginning of October 1918, Conrad staying at the Norfolk Hotel while Jessie was in hospital, and this would have provided the opportunity for this "friendly" lunch.
