En 1878 Joseph Conrad entró en la marina mercante inglesa y recorrió Malasia y el Caribe. Doce años después se embarcó hacia el Congo y ahí estuvo al mando de un vapor, en la ruta entre Kinshasa y Léopoldville, que tenía la finalidad de recolectar el marfil que se intercambiaba por mercancías baratas con las diferentes tribus de la región.
