Joseph Conrad was born to Polish parents in the Ukraine in 1857. He spent much of his life on ships.
In the late 1890s, he travelled as mate on the "Highland Forrest" bound for the Far East. His captain, John McWhirr, was later depicted in the short story "Typhoon". Conrad died in Kent in 1924. This is an extract from "Typhoon", reproduced by permission of Wordsworth Classics.
