Like Heart of Darkness and Lord Jim before it, The Secret Sharer is one
of Conrad's most personal tales, taking incidents, characters, and even ships
out of Conrad's seafaring years. Although The Secret Sharer was written ten
years after Lord Jim, there is biographical evidence to show that Conrad
actually was brought back in his thinking to the period from which Lord Jim
