Chapter Twenty-Seven.

Now Jim and Marlow are sitting on the veranda of Jim's house in Patusan,
Veranda III. Jim continues the story of the attack on Sheriff Ali, but he also
tells a story of how he settled a divorce case in one of the outlying
villages. The story of the attack on Sherif Ali follows first.

Before the dawn came, Jim, Dain Waris, and a party of the Bugis settlers
climbed the second hill and took up positions below the fortress of Sherif
