Chapter Thirteen.
Marlow continues describing his interview with the Frenchman. As the
Frenchman sighs, saying how quickly time passes, Marlow has a vision, and sees
the Frenchman as if with new eyes. He sees the old man as "raw material" out
of which great men are made; but time had passed the old man by, and he had an
honorable, but obscure, position aboard a French warship. As Marlow tells the
Frenchman what he had learned, the old man meditates, and then begins a
