Lord Jim: Chapters 7 - 12

Chapter Seven.

Over dinner, and after-dinner coffee and cigars, Jim begins to tell
Marlow his story. They sit on the veranda (veranda II henceforth) of Marlow's
hotel, the Malabar house. Marlow comments to his own audience that Jim was
"one of us." Jim reveals the deep feelings that Marlow has suspected he had.
In response to Marlow's cautiously worded question about how Jim feels on the
witness stand, Jim reaches across the table, grabs Marlow's arm, and says, "It
