Lord Jim: Chapters 1 - 6
Chapter One.
The narrator begins his story at the point when Jim has left the sea (but
before he has gone to Patusan), when Jim is working as a water-clerk for a
ship-chandler. His job is to get a ship before it is docked in the harbor,
to welcome the captain, and to invite the captain to visit the supply house of
his employer. Jim is described as being about six feet tall, deep voiced,
straightforward, and immaculately dressed in white.
