Miguel de Cervantes, Hernan Cortez, St. John of the Cross and I now have something in common: We have all studied in the ancient and enduring University of Salamanca. Founded in 1218 in this venerable city 130 miles northwest of Madrid, it is one of the oldest and most prestigious institutions of higher learning in the Western Hemisphere. When I enrolled in its summer program, I received with my student ID a new, privileged identity that opened up a world of modern and ancient Spanish culture.
