Miguel de Cervantes-Saavedra (commonly known as Cervantes) did not begin writing until after several military adventures (including a five year imprisonment in Algeria). His best-known work, "Don Quixote" (1605), stands both as a progenitor of the modern novel and a brilliantly satirical yet tender parody of the outdated chivalric traditions of knight-errantry from the perspective of seventeenth century Spain.
