``Dear reader, pardon my poor child's faults,'' Cervantes wrote in a preface to his book, Don Quixote. He need not have apologized for his literary ``child.'' It is a masterpiece of world literature.

Cervantes was born in Alcala de Henares, Spain. His full name was Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra. He joined the army in 1570, and was wounded in a battle against the Turks. He left the army in 1575 to go back to Spain. Pirates captured his ship, and he was taken as a slave to Algeria. He tried to escape many times but did not get his freedom for five years.
