MADE in 1939, this classic version of Emily Bronte's Gothic romance stands above other more recent adaptations. Much of its success is due to Laurence Olivier's tour-de-force as Heathcliff - dark-eyed, brooding and with a hint of menace, Olivier (pictured with Merle Oberon) got closer than anyone to BrontI's vision of the complex and troubled soul of her wayward romantic hero.
