Emily Jane Bronte (1818-1848) was the second youngest daughter of clergyman Patrick Bronte (ne Brunty) and Maria Branwell. Mrs Bronte died in 1821 and in 1825 two elder daughters also died, at the ages of 11 and 10, after being sent away to school. Consequently, Emily, her surviving sisters Charlotte and Anne, and their brother, Branwell, remained at home, where they created a fantasy world, chronicled in a series of detailed stories written in miniature books.
