Maryse Conde does for Emily Bronte and Wuthering Heights what Bernie Worrell did for Bach: she funkatizes the mother. This is one mean little book, mean in spirit and mean in design. It's mad comical too, but in a cruel-to-the-bone, sadistic kind of way, the kind of book where tortured souls die horribly only to discover there's no peace in the hereafter either.
