The sun was shining and the wind scarcely breathing, which was not what I wanted for a walk across Haworth Moors. I wanted storms and lowering skies. Curiously, as I approached the ruins of Top Withins - the supposed inspiration for Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights - the sun slipped behind a cloud, the wind rose and an icy blast sliced through me.
In Haworth, atmosphere is all. The ruined farmhouse bears no resemblance to Wuthering Heights, but its setting is spot on.
