Summer is already past its prime when Cathy and Nelly set out on their
first ride to join her cousin. It is a close sultry day, and when they
arrive at the appointed spot, they find only a little herd-boy, who tells them
that "Master Linton" is waiting for them further on, near the Heights. Nelly
is annoyed, but the two travel on till they find the boy, within a quarter of
a mile of the farmhouse. He looks so sick and weak that even Nelly is shocked,
