In June, 1778, Hindley's son Hareton Earnshaw is born, and a few months
later his mother, weakened by her confinement, dies of consumption. With
Frances gone, Hindley grows desperate and gives himself up to reckless
dissipation. Of all the servants, only Nelly and Joseph are able to bear the
master's evil conduct for long, Nelly because she has been given charge of
Hareton, and Joseph because "it was his vocation to be where he had plenty of
