Beatrix Potter appealed to Americans in 1927 to help preserve the Lake Distric countryside near her English home. She sent an illustrated letter which showed Peter Rabbit pleading like a begging dog. Potter offered a signed drawing in return for a five-dollar contribution. The appeal was carred in the Horn Book who took Potter's work seriously.
