Dateline: WASHINGTON Under the wide branches of a fake tree, two dozen small children paid remarkably close attention to a retelling of "The Tale of Peter Rabbit, " despite popping flashbulbs, a friendly costumed Peter standing nearby, and adults walking noisily all around.

Many thought the reader with bright red socks peeking from under gray suit pants _ that would be the British ambassador to the United States, Sir Christopher Meyer _ sounded awfully funny. But they loved the timeworn tale of the mischievous bunny just the same.
