As a child I loved to read the books about Oz. I read ``The Wizard of Oz,'' ``The Patchwork Girl of Oz'' and others. When the movie came out starring Judy Garland, every kid was delighted and frightened by it.

But that was long before I knew that L. Frank Baum was a racist.

While editor of the Aberdeen (S.D.) Saturday Pioneer, Mr. Baum wrote an editorial just six days after the dreadful slaughter of innocent men, women and children at a place called Wounded Knee that read in part; "Having wronged them (the Sioux) once, perhaps we should wrong them one more time and wipe ...
