Jan. 31: The 8th Marquis of Queensberry, creator of the rules of boxing under which all important ring contests are conducted, dies at the age of 66.

Feb. 2: Six cities -- Boston, Detroit, Milwaukee, Baltimore, Chicago and St. Louis -- ratify an agreement to form baseball's American League. The new league is not recognized by the established National League.
