Before the days of Oz creator L. Frank Baum, even before Chittenango was an official place, a group of citizens gathered in the town of Sullivan seeking a place to worship.

The year was 1833 and the group made up of members and friends of the Methodist Episcopal Church had made their congregation official. Two years later, a prominent citizen, John B. Yates, donated property for a parsonage, which was ultimately built in 1850.
