L. Frank Baum's Oz books were popular in the early part of this century, but the series got its biggest marketing boost in 1939, when Hollywood rolled out the film version.

"The Wizard of Oz" is considered one of the most widely seen movies of all time - along with "Gone with the Wind," produced the same year.

But the movie differs significantly from Baum's original book, "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz." Hollywood did more than drop "Wonderful" from the title. The movie tightened and recast the plot, changing Baum's rambling adventure ...
