In L. Frank Baum's The Wizard of Oz, Dorothy meets the Tin Woodman, the Scarecrow, and the Cowardly Lion, who accompany her on her quest to see the Wizard in the Emerald City. In the end, they are rewarded with what each wants most: Dorothy gets to go back to Kansas, the Tin Woodman gets a heart, the Scarecrow a brain, and the Cowardly Lion some courage.
