Children's literature, as early as the 1790s, included both a caution against violence and urgings for male characters to prove themselves physically. Mitzi Myers writes that war stories for children often used a survival story as their model. At the turn of the twentieth century, the war story's guise as "pure adventure" had worn thin. "They inculcate," writes Myers, "patriotic moral values or, more often, question the morality of war" (327).
