The analysis of legal tactics and gender assumptions in the construction of female roles in nineteenth century England was made by comparing the strategy of representation availed by a wife accused of forging her husband's will in Anthony Trollope's Orley Farm to that used by Adelaide Barlett who was charged with poisoning her husband in the popular 1886 Pimlico case. It was clear the Barlett and Orley Farms' Lady Mason were acquitted because they have adopted the logic of passivity and submissive role middle-class men have designed them to be.
