LATE last month the governor of the Bank of England, Robin Leigh Pemberton, made an impressive appearance at the Reform Club. The distinguished audience of 150 were not bankers, but members of the Trollope Society. The society is a newcomer to the literary scene; six years ago it did not exist. Today it has close to 5,000 members (including, it once claimed, a quarter of the Cabinet-and even, it is rumoured, the current prime minister). Why the sudden interest, both in New York and London?
