NOTHING makes landowners shudder quite like the sight of gipsies. But Winchester College in Hampshire - alma mater of author Anthony Trollope and former Tory foreign secretary Lord Howe - had a remarkably painless experience when six caravans of travellers rolled up next to their cricket pitch.

'The caravans moved in on Monday night and we served an eviction order on Wednesday morning to be complied with the next day, but they left during the night,' says school bursar Jeff Hynam.
