Young people sometimes ask, "What books should I read to become a writer?" The short answer is always, "You should read everything -- the Bible, Perry Mason mysteries, poetry translated from the Bulgarian, current bestsellers, cereal boxes, Shakespeare, Anna Karenina, regency romances, Tarzan of the Apes and all the children's books of E. Nesbit."
But this is seldom the advice the young wish to hear. What they really want is an enchiridion -- a handbook to the writing life, offering them hope, inspiration, stirring example in a few hundred pages. To my mind, there are about five classics that ...
