Jul. 16--The news media, already under intense scrutiny for their use of anonymous sources, must now deal with an ever-growing source of concern: the proliferation of blogs and frequent anonymous postings.

As a result, newspapers and other news outlets are warning staffers of the dangers of using such Internet information in news reports. At The Virginian-Pilot, for instance, the paper's updated policy on anonymous sources addresses the matter: "Anonymous comments from Web logs and other Internet sites should not be used.
