New Berlin clerk gets big donation Anonymous taxpayer sends $2,108 for legal bills

An anonymous donor has sent the city clerk more than $2,000 to pay the legal bills that the clerk incurred when fighting election-tampering charges filed by a community group.

The Common Council had voted last week to pay the bill, but an alderman switched his vote this week, leaving City Clerk Bill Bowers to pay it himself.

City Hall colleagues and a New Berlin couple he had never met had made small donations and then the Federal Express envelope came. Inside an envelope, addressed to him from a "New Berlin City Taxpayer," were two money orders: one for $1,108, the other for $1,000. The ...
