Alcoholics Anonymous Losing a Step, Critics Say // Spiritual Loss Blamed for Perceived Drop in Success

Alcoholics Anonymous is losing effectiveness because the group has slipped from its spiritual moorings, some are charging.

Disciples of the Episcopal priest on whose principles the 12 steps are based say the success rate for Alcoholics Anonymous, founded in 1935, has fallen drastically in recent years.

"There are a lot of people for whom the 12-step program is not working because they are not in touch with the power that is going to make the difference," said the Rev. Paul Everett of The Pittsburgh Experiment, a Christian group founded by the late Rev. Samuel Shoemaker.
