Easy-to-get credit cards. Car payments. Predatory lenders charging
exorbitant interest rates. Whatever the source, consumer debt is an
enormous problem.
Federal Reserve statistics reveal that, as of the end of 2002, Americans
collectively owed more than $1.73 trillion. That's approximately $5,750 for
every man, woman and child in the United States.
Many people saddled with large amounts of outstanding debt end up feeling
overwhelmed, unable to see a way out of their predicament. Others find
their sense of self-worth tied up with the money they owe.
