Sophoclēs
( c. 496–406/5 BC), one of the great Athenian tragedians, born at Colōnus near Athens, the son of Sophilus, a wealthy manufacturer of armour. The anonymous ancient biography of the poet gives a great deal of information about him, no doubt much of it unreliable. His beauty and his skill in music and dancing early attracted attention; as a boy he led the chorus which sang the paean in honour of the Greek victory over the Persian invaders at Salamis in 480 BC.
