The Atlanta Hawks looked lousy in preseason. They couldn't score, and their first-round pick, Doug Edwards, was hurt. They had a new coach, Lenny Wilkens, and some new personnel (Craig Ehlo, Andrew Lang), and needed time to adjust.

Expectations? Moderate at best.

But suddenly, the Hawks are the hottest team in basketball. They were riding a 12-game winning streak into Baltimore for last night's game against the Bullets, and they were doing it without shooting well (45 percent).
