WHEN IT WAS NAMED: Mid-19th century

NAMED FOR: The Rev. Samuel May, pastor of Scituate's Second Parish Church (now Norwell's First Parish Church), from 1836 to 1842

HISTORY: The Rev. May was the uncle of author Louisa May Alcott, who is believed to have spent summers at the house as a child. He planted the elm trees that gave the property its name. No farming is done there now.
