MEMO TO MICHIGAN: Cur TAXES!
According to the Michigan Business Activity Index, the state's economy grew 1 percent in 2000, compared with a 5-percent expansion in the nation's gross domestic product (GDP), both measured after removing the effects of inflation.
Granted, the domestic automakers and their suppliers got pounded during the second half of 2000, despite record auto sales during the calendar year. But beyond the cyclical character of Michigan's economy injury, the state appears to be compounding its problem.
